On this day in 1855 Eleanor Marx was born. Eleanor was a co-founder of our union in 1889. Eleanor was at the forefront of the campaign for the eight hour working day and consistently fought for both economic and gender equality, being the foremother of socialist-feminism. Today we celebrate Eleanor's achievements and are proud to have a membership of which more than 50% are women.

73 years ago today Nye Bevan met with the BMA to seek doctors support for the creation of the NHS. Two years later, despite pushing against a tide of cynicism and resistance, our National Health Service was born. Today lets remind ourselves of the hard fought struggle to create our NHS and let it reinvigorate our passion and determination to defend it.
